of Corals Relocated in Partnership with Environment Agency \u2013 Abu Dhabi<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Abu Dhabi, UAE \u2013 7 February 2021<\/strong>: As part of its ongoing effort to sustain Abu Dhabi\u2019s unique maritime environment, whilst developing world-leading maritime infrastructure, Abu Dhabi Ports today announced the launch of a major coral relocation and conservation project, in the waters surrounding Khalifa Port.<\/p>\n<p>Conducted in partnership with the Environment Agency \u2013 Abu Dhabi (EAD), Khalifa Port\u2019s coral relocation forms part of a series of mitigation measures to lessen the environmental impact from dredging, whilst reclaiming waters that separate the offshore port\u2019s breakwater from the spectacular Ras Ghanada coral reef, which is situated nearby.<\/p>\n<p>The plan is being unveiled ahead of the construction of a heavy rail terminal that will connect Abu Dhabi Ports\u2019 flagship, deep-water port to the UAE\u2019s future rail network, Etihad Rail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mohamed Eidha Tannaf Al Menhali, Port Director \u2013 Khalifa Port, Abu Dhabi Ports<\/strong>, said: \u201cChampioning and protecting Abu Dhabi\u2019s natural aquatic ecosystems have always been key considerations in the ongoing development of Khalifa Port, one of world\u2019s most advanced deep-water ports. Abu Dhabi Ports is committed to driving both local and global initiatives aimed at introducing new technologies and solutions that will protect marine life and limit the impact of port activities on the local environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMindful of the dangers posed by coral reef degradation, which represents an existential threat to the planet\u2019s biodiversity, Abu Dhabi Ports is leading the effort to implement extensive mitigation measures across its waters through expert coral relocation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are collaborating with respected expert marine consultants, engineers and academics, in addition to partnering with the Environment Agency \u2013 Abu Dhabi (EAD) to help conserve the coral colonies at Ras Ghanada, the most unique, diverse, and vibrant coral community in the Arabian Gulf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Typically undertaken during dredging and reclamation works, coral reef relocation is a critical exercise in port operations and is deemed essential for protecting local marine wildlife ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ahmed Al Hashmi, Acting Executive Director, Terrestrial &amp; Marine Biodiversity, Environment Agency \u2013 Abu Dhabi (EAD), said:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe UAE is blessed with some of the world\u2019s most resistant coral reefs. With harsh conditions of extreme heat and high salinity, it is imperative the EAD works closely with all partners to ensure that we preserve and sustain these marine treasures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the region\u2019s largest environmental regulator, we are committed to enhancing the biodiversity of Abu Dhabi\u2019s rich marine and desert ecosystems. Collaborating with entities such as Abu Dhabi Ports, and world-leading marine experts, on Khalifa Port\u2019s coral relocation at Ras Ghanada, will ensure Abu Dhabi\u2019s rich and remarkable ecosystem continues not just to survive but thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the supervision and guidance of the EAD, certain species of coral will be relocated from Khalifa Port\u2019s northern revetment to its environmental breakwater.<\/p>\n<p>Using several methods of transporting and fixing the coral, the results and outputs of the project will be evaluated, with a view to determine the best methods and mechanisms for coral transfer and relocation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nDavid Gatward, Acting Chief, Engineering &amp; Technical Services, Abu Dhabi Ports<\/strong>, said: \u201cSustainability lies at the heart of all Abu Dhabi Ports\u2019 infrastructural developments, and as engineers, we ensure from the very first minute, we devise environmental solutions that just don\u2019t solve the issue of today but also those of the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafeguarding corals at Ras Ghanada using advanced mitigation methods that we have employed on this the project, such as relocation, is critical to maintaining the species diversity of corals within the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All data gleaned from the coral harvesting and transplantation will inform a forthcoming technical paper that is set to be published by a leading marine biologist from New York University Abu Dhabi (NYU-AD), Dr. John Burt, the university\u2019s Associate Professor of Biology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mohammed Al Tamimi, VP \u2013 Corporate HSSE, Abu Dhabi Ports<\/strong>, said: \u201cThe coral reefs and sea meadows that live in proximity to Khalifa Port are among the UAE\u2019s most biologically diverse habitats, and Abu Dhabi Ports is very proud to be spearheading, such a tremendous initiative that ensures their continued survival and growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbu Dhabi Ports has a proud track record in preserving and safeguarding our marine habitats, particularly along our coastlines.
